“Winter Is Coming”
(Sorry, I couldn’t write a blog about winter without including that)
How do I stay healthy this winter? Can I make it to Spring without getting a cold? How do I not slip up when running early in the morning or late at night? I probably shouldn’t leave the heating on full blast 24/7 but I’m tempted!
Winter. Some people love it. Some people hate it. I love winter but it can also make me feel sluggish and as though leaving the house is the worst idea EVER. Winter makes me think of cosy blankets, hot water bottles, roaring fires and lovely yummy comfort food washing down with a hot chocolate.
So how do we stay healthy this winter?
A Happy Immune System
Your immune system requires balance and harmony in order to function properly. Trying to stay healthy is a good way to help your immune system fight off germs.
Here are some suggestions:
- Get a good nights sleep
- Wash your hands regularly
- Move your body often
- Drink alcohol in moderation
- Cook meat thoroughly
- Eat lots of fruit and veggies especially ones rich in vitamin C and/or zinc
- Drink plenty of water
- Don’t smoke
- Take supplements, if needed (I was advised to take vitamin D from October – April)
Move Your Body
I get it. It’s cold outside and the last thing you want to do is come out from under the cosy blanket and put on your running/cycling/gym kit. If exercising outside seems like a death defying stunt then exercise at home instead! There are plenty of free workouts on YouTube. Or if you’re into yoga then try Yoga with Adriene which is free and fabulous. If you’re a runner who doesn’t want to go outside then either invest in a treadmill (AKA The Dreadmill) or join a gym.
I like running outside in all conditions except for cold, heavy rain. Brrrr! I came across this quick read from Runners Need winter running layering guide. It advises how to stay warm as well as healthy this winter. Also make sure you wear high vis/fluorescent colours when outside in the dark.
Staying Warm
From October to April you can find me under a blanket and hugging a hot water bottle. I love winter and wearing cosy, warm clothes. Wearing layers of clothing helps as I can add or take off depending on how I’m feeling. This also helps to keep the energy bills down.
I also try to avoid sitting for too long which is a fab excuse to get up and make another cup of tea. If I’m in my clinic then I’m usually warm and active as massage is a physical job. I always use towels and blankets to keep my clients comfortable during their treatment.
With All That Said…
Winter is my favourite season. I love walking my dog on a cold, crisp morning. It makes me feel alive and everything looks so pretty! Plus I love Christmas!
